My next job was going to be classic detective work: observation and surveillance. Being able to observe is an essential skill for any police officer, uniform or CID. Every day, we’d meet many people in different places – victims, onlookers, suspects – and we had to be able to remember their faces, descriptions and information about them. Police are highly trained in observation. You can guarantee if you see a police friend in the street as you drive past, they will notice you and wave, whereas most other people won’t.

Surveillance is slightly different: it’s still observing, but this time it’s closely watching a person or persons who are under suspicion of wrongdoing. It’s an essential part of being a detective, and sometimes called a 90-10: 90 per cent boredom, 10 per cent panic. No wonder none of us enjoyed it very much.
